California Issues Emergency Greywater Rules (August 2009)

    Due to recent drought conditions in California, the state has adopted new greywater rules making it easier to install simple greywater systems without plumbing and/or construction permits.  Now it's easier than ever to conserve water and re-use it in your landscape.

    Greywater as defined by the state of California is the untreated wastewater from your showers and tubs, bathroom sinks, and laundry machine.  Kitchen sinks and toilets are not greywater and can not be part of a legal greywater system.

    The state now allows simple plumbing modifications that capture this used water and deliver it to the landscape, provided certain precautions are taken.  Please contact us to learn more about these exciting new rules and what the options are for your location.


We offer consultation and installation expertise on the following types of greywater systems that do not require a permit:
  • Clothes Washer System
  • Single Fixture System ( A system collecting greywater from a single drain that may collect greywater from more than one fixture.)
Other systems that require a permit are:
  • "Simple Systems" that collect less than 250 Gallons per Day but are more detailed than Clothes Washer Systems and Single Fixture Systems
  • "Complex Systems" that collect more than 250 Gallons per Day.
  • "Treated Greywater Systems" which include constructed wetlands or sand filtered systems for use in a drip irrigation system or are otherwise treated for re-use in the household, i.e, to flush toilets.
